About Salon Capes
Back in 1982, Sig "Ol' Blue Eyes" Abeles, our founder and president, was
sitting in a hair salon in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida having his hair cut. He noticed
that the cutting cape the stylist had placed on him was falling apart. He also
complained that the neck was to narrow for people with large necks like him.
The stylist agreed and said "That's how everybody makes them". He looked at
the hair cutting cape closer and realized that it was made of a very cheap
fabric and the quality of the construction was poor at best. Having been a
clothing manufacturer in New York, and having been a supplier of all types of
garments to every major department store in the country, he knew what was a
well made garment and what was not.
He asked the owner of the salon how much he had paid for the hair cutting
cape. He was shocked when heard the price. He told the salon owner that he
could make him a larger and better hair cutting cape out of a higher quality
material for the same price if not less. The owner, intrigued but a little
skeptical, gave Sig his first order: one hair cutting cape. When Blue Eyes
returned with the salon cape, the owner was stunned. He could not believe
how big the hair cutting cape was and how good it looked. He said he had
never seen a haircutting cape with a neck that large or with that many snaps.
He said it was exactly what he had always wanted in a haircutting cape, and
he immediately ordered a dozen more cutting capes.
Ol' Blue Eyes was curious as to the what the possibilities might be in getting
into the salon apparel business, so later that week he went to some local
beauty supply stores to see what other companies in the industry were
charging for their hair cutting capes/ salon apparel and what kind of quality
they were producing. What he found was basically two types of garments:
lower cost salon apparel of extremely poor quality and better quality salon
apparel at outrageous prices. Sig knew that by selling directly to the salon he
could produce hair cutting capes & salon apparel of higher quality than anyone
was making, and offer them at a price that was close to or even below the
price the companies producing poor quality salon capes were charging. Ol'
Blue Eyes had been born!
Ol' Blue Eyes started producing hair cutting capes and salon apparel and
began to show them to local salon owners here in South Florida. They were a
little skeptical at first, but couldn't resist trying that BIG CAPE with the HUGE
NECK. Once they saw how good our hair cutting capes were, they kept
ordering more and more. They also made requests for other items such as
hair color capes, customer robes, and stylist jackets and robes. Ol' Blue Eyes
didn't just make the salon apparel how he thought they should be made, but
rather encouraged the salon owners and hairdressers to tell him what they
wanted in the items, as well as what frustrated them about other hair cutting
capes/ chemical capes they had used so that he could produce a garment that
would meet all their needs. This is why we say that our line of salon apparel is
designed by the salon professional, for the salon professional because many
of our innovations have come from the suggestions (and the frustrations) that
our customers have encountered in their salons. We have used these ideas to
create what we consider the most versatile, durable, and comfortable line of
hair cutting capes,chemical capes,and salon apparel in the industry.
Well, over 20 years have passed since we took that first order for from our first
customer. Since then we have grown to include over 3,000 salons as our
customers. Most of our customers are here in South Florida, but we have
clients all around the state and in other parts of the U.S.A. We service salons
ranging from small one chair barbers to huge mega salon-spas that exceed
over $1,000,000 in sales a MONTH! We also pride ourselves on treating every
customer as if they were our only customer, handling each order with equal
importance because we know that is the key to establishing long lasting
business relationships.
